Wi-Fi basics for small business

Good Wi-Fi is part radio engineering, part network design. Small offices fail for predictable reasons: one consumer router behind brick, guest traffic on the same VLAN as file shares, or old WPA modes left enabled.

Segmentation and guests

Put visitors on a separate SSID and VLAN from printers and NAS. Modern business APs make this straightforward; consumer gear often pretends. For security framing, OWASP still helps teams think about lateral movement after a single compromise: OWASP.

Density and placement

Mount APs high and central, not inside metal cabinets. Add nodes when active clients per AP climb or sticky clients roam poorly. Sometimes the right answer is a short cable run to a desk with a switch – Wi-Fi is not a moral imperative.

Pair wireless work with UPS basics so brownouts do not look like mystery outages. Planning a refresh? Start a conversation – we keep recommendations grounded.
