UPS basics for workstations and routers

A UPS is insurance against brief outages and dirty power. It is not a generator; it buys minutes to save work and shut down cleanly.

Sizing

Sum the wattage of everything plugged into the battery side: PC, monitors, router, maybe a small NAS. Pick a unit with headroom so fans are not maxed at idle. Runtime scales with load; marketing numbers assume half load.

Sine wave and sensitive electronics

Active PFC power supplies behave better on pure or near-sine wave outputs. Simulated sine can work but may be flaky on some PSUs. Read the UPS manual – boring and worthwhile.

Protect the path online

If the modem and router drop, VPNs and cloud saves stall. Putting network edge on battery prevents mystery disconnects during voltage sags. Pair with Wi-Fi basics when you redesign power and networking together.
