Thermal cleaning and fan noise on desktops

Heat makes electronics throttle and fans scream. Most desktops benefit from annual cleaning; laptops sooner if pets or construction dust are in play.

Safe cleaning habits

Power down, ground yourself on metal chassis, use short compressed air bursts so fans do not overspin. Hold blades gently when possible. Re-seat filters if your case has them.

Thermal paste and pads

Paste dries over years. Replacing paste on a GPU or CPU can drop temperatures sharply when the original application was poor. If a GPU crashes under load after cleaning, inspect pads thickness – some coolers need exact pad heights.

When to stop cleaning and start replacing

Bearing grind noises, cracked fan blades, or VRM hotspots under light load point to hardware issues. See repair vs replace and value tiers before sinking money into an aging board.
