Small office network documentation basics
Networks drift. Without a single page of truth, troubleshooting becomes archaeology. Documentation is for future panic, not for filing cabinets.
Minimum viable diagram
ISP handoff, modem, router or firewall, switches, APs, VLAN IDs, and where servers or NAS live. Note management IPs and which ports are WAN-only.
Credentials and MFA
Store admin logins in a vault with MFA enrollment documented. For security framing on configuration management, NIST is a steady reference: NIST CSRC.
Change log
Short dated notes when VLANs or firewall rules change. Pair with Wi-Fi basics and project sanity checks.
