Preparing your computer for service

Preparing your computer for service

Good intake reduces surprises. A few steps protect your data, set expectations, and help technicians move faster.

Backup first

Service can involve reinstalls or drive swaps. Assume temporary loss of access. Follow backup hygiene basics before you drop off gear.

Accounts and encryption

Provide a local admin-capable account or BitLocker recovery material if we must boot to tools. If full-disk encryption is enabled and you withhold keys, some work cannot proceed. Document vendor logins separately from the machine when possible.

What to bring

Power adapter, proof of purchase for warranty claims, and a short written symptom list with timestamps. For disposal-bound systems, read recycling and drives before handing storage off.
